Hahoe Tal (Set of 2)
Offered here is a rare, vintage pair of Korean Hahoe Masks, estimated to be over 40 years old. This set represents the Yangban (Aristocrat) and Bune (Young Woman), the most iconic figures from South Korea’s National Treasure No. 121.
Key Features for Collectors:
Antique Value: These masks have been cherished for over four decades. The aging of the wood and the subtle deepening of the lacquer finish give them an authentic vintage soul that new replicas cannot match.
Master Craftsmanship: Hand-carved with traditional chisels, the reverse side clearly shows the marks of a skilled artisan from decades ago.
1-The Yangban (Aristocrat): Features a unique detached jaw, a masterpiece of ancient design that allows for dynamic facial expressions during performance.
Yang Ban Musk/Tal[The Hahoe mask representing a Yangban, a member of the traditional Korean aristocratic class.]
Dimensions: 24.4cm[h] x 15.2cm[w]
2-The Bune (Beauty): A serene and elegant representation of traditional beauty, accented with time-honored vermillion dots.

Historical Context:
The Hahoe masks from Andong, Korea, are a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. They were historically used in village rituals to pray for peace and a good harvest. Owning a piece crafted 40 years ago is not just owning decor; it is owning a piece of preserved Korean cultural history.
Condition: Remarkably well-preserved for its age. The wood is solid, and the expressions remain as vivid as the day they were carved.
