This package includes the SE 5500 Microphone, shock mount, original power supply, 7 pin XLR cable, power cable and a Middle Atlantic pop screen.
The mic is in excellent condition, with a small line on the body just under the model number. It has been tested and works fine, with no known issues. The diaphragm mount is solid, the connectors are very clean. The amount of visible wear would indicate this SE 5500 has had very gentle handling.
The screen, body, XLR connector, and power supply are all in very good condition. It is advisable to replace the suspension bands with new ones, these are original and have lost their elasticity.
There is no information available from SE Electronics specific to this discontinued SE 5500 model. There is some very favorable commentary on various online forums, some of which is posted below.
>>>This is NOT a multi-pattern mic, and there are no external switches or any other means to change the pattern.<<<
"This large...diaphragm valve based microphone from SE Electronics, introduced in 2001 when it replaced the earlier SE Electronics SE5000. Although the SE5500 looks identical to the 5000, it is a much improved microphone, ......but the basic capsule is better giving the mic a better sound and an extended top end compared to the original model."
"The SE5500 was designed and manufactured by Shanghai ShuaiYin, the same way that other early SE mics were."
"(any) anecdote about ex-Neumann employees actually refers to the mics rebranded by BPM and made by 797. The involvement by the German BPM seems debatable. It seems that they probably just did some QC at best, and specced the mic to be *somewhat* like a U87."
